What is Chiropractic?
The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.
Your nerve system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If interference with the signals traveling over nerves occurs due to stress (physical, chemical, and/or mental), parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly.
Many people think that chiropractic is only for your back. This misconception is easily understood. After all, chiropractors do work primarily on your back. However, Chiropractic is about having a healthy nervous system, allowing your body to be as healthy as possible.
Your body is controlled by three distinct nerve systems – the central nerve system, peripheral nerve system and autonomic nerve system (which are further divided into the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve system). All 3 parts of the nerve system are interrelated and must be balanced so that you can operate in unity and create a truly healthy body.
At any given moment, millions of bits of “information” from sight and hearing enter your nerve system and must be analyzed to determine an appropriate response. About 99.9 per cent is discarded as “unimportant” at the moment. While all this is going on, all of your other senses are active, too, bombarding the nerve system and demanding a response. At the same time your body’s many organs and functions must be tirelessly monitored, directed and unified. This is all accomplished by the integration of your body’s brain and three nerve systems.
The Doctor of Chiropractic works with your three nerve systems to bring about a positive change in your body. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to remove interference and improve your nerve system function. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting nerve function.
Chiropractic is great for low back pain. It also works great for many ‘non back’ problems such as migraine headaches, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, crohn’s disease, numbness and tingling, heart problems, asthma, allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other lung problems.
