Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Relief – Can Chiropractic Help?
There are many carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. But, the most common symptom associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is numbness. The numbness can be located throughout the forearm and into the hand, or some patients just experience numbness in the hand. The numbness in the hand is most commonly on the palm-side of the hand.
So, what causes the numbness or what are some carpal tunnel syndrome causes? First, we need to review some knowledge regarding the anatomy of the forearm and wrist. There are small bones in the wrist called carpal bones and also a ligament called the transverse carpal ligament. These structures form a tunnel in which the 9 tendons of the forearm flexor muscles travel through. In addition, there is a nerve called the median nerve which also travels through the carpal tunnel along with the 9 flexor tendons. The carpal tunnel is about the size of a dime.
CTS is usually classified as an over-use type of injury. Therefore, individuals with repetitive jobs such as computer work, typing, packing boxes, working on an assembly line, etc. can suffer from CTS. Can you see how repetitive use of the hands could cause friction of the forearm tendons and the median nerve? The source of the numbness and pain is coming from the median nerve.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment
However, the median nerve could be entrapped at the neck, shoulder, elbow, or wrist. As a chiropractic physician I am trained to identify and treat the area of median nerve entrapment. The chiropractic treatments can address all areas of entrapment whether that is the neck, shoulder, elbow, and/or wrist. The ability to treat all entrapment sites is key for ensuring a successful result.
