Treatment For Tingling in the Leg – Can Chiropractic Help Me?
Many of us have experienced lower back pain at some point in our lives. You may even recall leaning over with your hands on your knees because the pain was severe. But, what happens when the symptoms of lower back pain are different such as numbness, tingling, and/or pain radiating into one leg. For you and others it can be concerning. I will address this issue for you in this article.
For you to have a better understanding of where leg symptoms originate from you need to have some knowledge of the anatomy of the lower back. The spine is made up of vertebras which have a shock absorbing structure between each level known as the disk. These disks are very important structures as they support about 80% of our weight. The back of the vertebrae have structures known as the spinous processes (this is what you can feel in your neck or back) and transverse processes in which numerous ligaments and muscles connect to. The structure between the vertebrae and the spinous process is known as the pedicle. This structure is very important as it determines this size of the opening in which the nerves exit the spine.
If your pedicles are short which results from genetic factors this can narrow the opening for your nerves. The opening for the nerves can also become narrower related to degenerative changes and arthritis which can occur as you age. This would also result in irritating or compressing the nerves and potentially causing leg tingling, numbness, or pain.
The need for treatment for tingling in the leg can also be caused by a bulging or herniated disk in the lower back. However, there can also be pain referred to the legs from your joints in the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints. If the numbness or tingling in the leg can be traced specifically throughout the leg it is more likely the nerve pinching is coming from a bulging or herniated disc. If the tingling or numbness in the leg is more diffuse, deep, and affects the entire leg or foot it is more likely to be referred from the joints in your lower back or sacroiliac joints.
Lastly, another condition that can cause you to seek treatment for tingling in the leg is spinal stenosis. This is where the opening for the spinal cord becomes narrower. For these individuals, the symptoms will often occur with walking or activity and the pain can be improved and resolved by stopping and leaning forward. The leaning forward increases the size of the narrowed canal producing less irritation of the nerves and thus improvement in symptoms.
