Lower Back Pain When Standing Relief – Can Chiropractic Help Me?

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek out Chiropractic Care.  There can be different factors that irritate or worsen lower back pain:

This is just a short list of some of the common activities that will irritate or worsen your lower back pain.  The activities that irritate or worsen your lower back pain is key in determining which structures are generating your pain and what treatment would best relieve your pain.

For instance, if your lower back pain is worsened by sitting and bending forward it tells me that the disk is likely involved in causing your pain.  If your lower back pain feels good when sitting but worsens when standing it tells me the facet joints in the back of the spine is likely generating your pain.    What activities or movements make your lower back pain worse?

In this article I would like to discuss lower back pain when standing relief.  I have already mentioned that it is likely the facet joints that are generating your pain.  The symptoms experienced include lower back pain, this could be pain, tightness, soreness, or stiffness.  Pain may also travel into the buttock or leg.  However, the pain will not travel past the knee and will not be numbness or tingling when the facet joints are involved.

How can we improve your lower back pain when standing?  First, there was a study from the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology that provides helpful pain relief information.  In this study, they divided people into two different groups.  Each group was going to stand continuously for 2 hours.  Group 1 was given no instructions.  Group 2 was instructed to simply bend forward and essentially touch their toes (or as close as they could) one time every 15 minutes.

The participants that simply leaned forward a total of 8 times over their 2 hours of standing were 36% less likely to report back pain following the 2 hours of standing.  That tells us that movement is important for improving facet joint pain and movement is key for lower back pain when standing relief.

Chiropractic adjustments positively affect the disk and facet joints by improving alignment and movement.  Thus, chiropractic adjustments and stretching are very effective in providing lower back pain relief in many cases.  Both treatments improve MOVEMENT which we know is key for lower back pain relief.
