Tension Headache Relief – The Role of Chiropractic
The most common type of headache experienced by people is a tension headache. A tension headache causes pain in the upper part of the neck which commonly travels into the back of the head and can even travel around each side of the head. Commonly, the discomfort is described like having a tight band around the head.
There can be several causes of tension headaches:
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Prolonged static postures such as working at a computer
- A lack of sleep
- Whiplash from a car accident
What treatment options do people have who experience tension headaches? The most common form of treatment is over the counter medications. However, if tension headaches occur on a regular basis there would be the concern of long term side effects to the stomach, liver, and kidneys. In addition, those taking NSAID’s over a long period of time are at greater risk for high blood pressure, ulcers, and a condition called intestinal hyperpermeability. It is also very common to experience “rebound headaches” as a result of using NSAID’s too frequently. Yes, using NSAIDs too frequently can actually increase your headache frequency. Also, the over the counter medication does not reduce the frequency of tension headaches but only helps with reducing the severity of pain when experiencing a tension headache.
Chiropractic care is very effective in reducing the frequency and severity of tension headaches. A chiropractic physician will use manipulation of the cervical spine (neck) which addresses the cause of the tension headaches since most headaches originate from the neck.
