Cervical Disc Herniation Symptoms & Treatment – Can Chiropractic Help?
Neck pain is a common complaint and can occur from several sources. One of the common sources of neck pain is the disc. You may be familiar with many of the following:
- Herniated disc
- Slipped disc
- Bulging disc
- Ruptured disc
What is the disc? The discs are located between each vertebra throughout your entire spine. The discs have important functions related to shock absorption and the stability of the spine.
You can think of the disc as a jelly doughnut. If the jelly herniated, it may pinch another structure such as a nerve. If the herniated disc material pinches something it will cause pain and symptoms. A patient with a disc herniation may have some of the following signs and/or symptoms:
- Neck Pain
- Arm Pain and/or Numbness
- Hand Numbness
- Arm Weakness
- Pain along the shoulder blade
- Increased neck pain with neck extension and rotation
- Improved neck pain with neck flexion
- Improved neck pain by putting their arm overhead
The disc herniations may occur related to repetitive stresses or can be caused by trauma. An example of a trauma would be cervical disc herniations after a car accident.
Chiropractic treatment can be very helpful in improving or eliminating cervical disc herniation symptoms and signs. You would certainly want to consider a short treatment trial of chiropractic care before even considering a cervical fusion surgery.
