Lower Back Pain After A Car Accident -Can Chiropractic Help Me?
Lower back pain after a car accident is a very common complaint. The injuries result to the lower back because structures such as ligaments, discs, facet joints, and muscles are stretched and/or torn beyond their normal capacity. These injuries result in inflammation and pain. Some common complaints related to lower back pain after a motor vehicle accident would include:
- Lower Back Pain
- Leg Pain After A Car Accident
- Leg Numbness After A Car Accident
- Sacroiliac Pain After A Car Accident
I would like to discuss some key factors related to whiplash treatments.
Factor 1: Lesson Inflammation: We need to start reducing the levels of inflammation as soon as possible after a lower back whiplash injury. In my opinion, one of the best treatments is utilizing an ice pack. You will want to put the ice pack on for 20 minutes, take an hour off, and then put the ice pack back on for 20 minutes again. The more times you can repeat this process the better. Consistent icing is very effective at reducing the levels of inflammation and is an underutilized treatment.
Factor 2: Keep Moving: The most common thing people want to do after developing lower back pain after a car accident is to stop moving or to become less active because of their pain levels. Thus, it is important to know which activities and movements are going to be safe and helpful versus what activity is going to be harmful. I help guide my patients with this factor in their recovery. If you become inactive, this will lead to increased muscle spasm, decreased range of motion, and increased pain levels. It is the opposite of what most people think.
Factor 3: Stretching & Exercise: A proper stretching and therapeutic exercise program is a major key to recovery of lower back pain after whiplash. I help guide patients through this process as it is key to implement certain stretches and exercises at certain points during their recovery. Also, as we talked about in Factor 2, exercises keep the joints moving.
Factor 4: Reduce Prolonged Postures: When joints are injured prolonged postures can cause increased inflammation and pain. If you are seated worker, taking very frequent breaks to change postures, change positions, and move will be very important especially early on in your recovery period. Again, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of proper movement for recovery.
Factor 5: DON’T WAIT: One of the most effective forms of movement for the injured tissues after whiplash is manual therapy. A chiropractic adjustment works by providing motion that stretching and exercise cannot achieve to the injured joints in the lower back. This motion is crucial to helping reduce inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain. A major key to recovery is to not wait to come in for treatment. The longer treatment is delayed the worse the long term outcome. DON’T WAIT
