Back Pain Relief – Can Chiropractic Help?
Back and neck pain relief are the 2 most common reasons people seek treatment from a chiropractic physician. Back pain is very common and is one of the leading causes of disability for worker’s and also a very common cause of lost work productivity. There can be various types of back pain:
- Upper Back Pain
- Mid Back Pain
- Lower Back Pain
- Pelvic Pain
- Back Pain After A Car Accident
- Spinal Arthritis
There are various treatments that can be helpful for back pain relief. However, I would like to discuss the difference between resting versus active treatment. There is overwhelming evidence that active treatment and continued movement by the patient is one of the most effective ways to treat these problems. Again, resting and limiting movement can actually make the pain cycle last for a longer duration and worsen in severity.
I really want to emphasize this point as many people with back pain who are seeking back pain relief may visit the emergency room, urgent care, or their family physician. Oftentimes, they may be prescribed medication and instructed to rest.
Why is movement very important as an effective back pain treatment for providing back pain relief? When vertebras in the back become misaligned they also lock up and become restricted. This causes the muscles to tighten up and/or go into spasm. If you have ever experienced back spasms you know how painful this can be and also how it can restrict your range of motion and movement.
The most effective way to reduce muscle spasm and back pain is to unlock the stuck vertebra. In my office, I accomplish this in 2 ways. First, I will provide muscle work to the tight muscles to assist them in loosening up. Secondly, I utilize chiropractic adjustments to realign the vertebra and restore the normal motion to each vertebra. A combination of muscle work and adjustments effectively provide back pain relief for many who are suffering.
Another great advantage of this treatment is that patient’s will typically begin experiencing improvement in back pain in a relatively short period of time and a relatively few visits. Each patient obviously responds differently but I take my recommendations on a visit by visit basis and do not recommend long term treatment plans.
If you are seeking back pain treatment for back pain relief the combination of muscle work and adjustments is very unique. Stretching and exercises are definitely helpful and encouraged but do not provide the type of movement that is achieved through muscle work and adjustments.
